New 2011 ranking chart
Hi Fire (F)

I see the 2011 stats and grading chart is up. Thanks! Here is the link for those who want to take a look at it.

http://www.triviaarena.com/xoops/modu ... ycontent/index.php?id=115

I have a couple of questions for you to answer to help me understand how the grading system works.

1)Are the teams only ranked within the grade they are currently playing in? So if you are currently playing in A grade you are only ranked in A grade as A1, A2, or A3 regardless of the players actual stats?
2)If that is the case, how will this work in determining which grade any given player will be put into next season?

For example lets pick two players who have played one match each. One in A grade and one in C grade. Can?t use B grade because no B grade games have been played yet. Is that going to make a difference?

susieq531 ? C team score 115, cpm 196.32, fast 2.891, row 5, rank C1
Zippy - A team score 60, cpm 138.67, fast 3.609, row 2, rank A3

Why is the player with the better stats ranked C1? As a coach I asked and you said you would explain to me how players are ranked and I am a tad puzzled by this ranking chart so I need your help.

Thank you so much. Very much appreciate your work.

Redd

Ps: this post is NOT to pick out any individual players. Everyone is GREAT!

Re: Firehorse, question re: new 2011 ranking chart
I'm willing to bet that firehorse's grading system needs all grades to have played to work. I bet they all change as soon as a grade B game has been played....

I could be totally wrong of course.

hey Nasty,

It could very well be because none of the B teams have played yet. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Hi Fire (F)

Glad to hear you are finally getting notifications of posts on the arena board. I was happy to see a few changes with the introduction of some B grade players.

I still have some questions:
1) What is your algorithm for calculating grade differentials, and which stats are included in it. CPM and Fast would seem neutral as those register the same no matter what grade you are playing and row is iffy. It seems the only stat that would be quantifiably different is score.

Yet here is a good example both players have played one match in total ? one A grade one B grade.

EASTCOASTGIRL (TAT) - score 67, cpm 197.37, fast 2.625, row 3 Grade A2
SUNLITWOMAN (DOH) - score 66, cpm 202.11, fast 3.047, row 3 Grade B3
2) Why the difference?

3) I also noticed that 55% of the current players are graded A, 18% B grade and 27% C grade. I realize that may be because all five A teams have played, two B teams have played, and three C teams have played. My question is wouldn?t the algorithm shift players around to have 33.3% in each grade or is it based on a finite number of participants (which it seems to be) or how exactly does that work?

As of today, one grade that seems most outstanding is lady ? she played ½ match in A grade.
LADY (KFB)- score 26, cpm 169.41, fast 2.547, row 3 ? Grade A3

4)I am wondering why the program wouldn?t auto move lady to B3 as is sunlitwoman whose stats are more or less identical?

Here are the results of KFC matches played in A grade to date. Both matches played with full teams.

TAT is the winner with 285 points and KFC has 135 ? TAT with a 150 point lead
KFB is the winner with 246 points and KFC has 163 ? KFB with an 83 point lead
TBT and KFA still to be played by KFC.

Despite such a large margin in scores KFC remains graded A
KFC being HazeleyedNanny A2, Chickynicky A3, Zippy B1. How does this happen?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
Redd

Re: Firehorse, question re: new 2011 ranking chart
Here are some additional comparisons:

One game in B grade - UnfixingBlowfish (OAH) score 75, cpm 228.33, fast 2.219, row 3, graded B2
Two games in A grade ? HazeleyedNanny (KFC) score 124, cpm 219.46, fast 2.813, row 3, graded A2
One and a half games in A grade ? chickynicky (KFC) score 64, cpm 188.68, fast 2.687, row 2, graded A3

Blowie has higher score, faster cpm, higher fast, same row (and higher) and yet was graded lower.

Two games played in A grade: zippy(KFC) score 94, cpm 138.67, fast 3.609 row 2, graded B1
One and a half games played in C grade:
woodstockchic (BBB) score 87, cpm 169.3, fast 3.172, row 2, graded C2

Woodstock has a higher score, higher cpm, higher fast and same row yet she is graded lower. How does this work?

One game played in C grade - butterfly-tattoo(KFD) score 48, cpm 187.53, fast 2.813, row 3 graded C3
Half a game in A grade - lady (KFB) score 26, cpm 169.41, fast 2.547, row 2, graded A3

butterfly-tattoo has comparable score, higher cpm, higher row yet is graded two grades lower. How so?

I still don't understand how the grading system works.

Cheers

Re: Firehorse, question re: new 2011 ranking chart
I'd love to know too, so you're not the only one figg!

Our little query seems to have been answered at least... now that a B grade game has been played there are one or two A players that have been awarded with 'B' status. Although I am, like you, confused as to how this is achieved.

I think it is going to be very difficult to compare inter-grades as you are doing (although I still would like Fire to tell us how it is calculated). That still begs questions about how players in the same grade are compared.

Take these comparisons for example (and I'm not picking on you guys deliberately, just tried to pick similar records):

Celtie score - 229 cpm - 241 fast - 2.328 row - 2 rating A2
Ruseri score - 190 cpm - 208 fast - 2.235 row - 2 rating A3
Huge score - 144 cpm - 171 fast - 2.25 row - 2 rating B1
chicky score - 64 cpm - 188 fast - 2.687 row - 2 rating A3

All A grade players, all similar fast times, all the same rows, only celtie with an outstanding cpm and all having played a different number of games (1 and a half to all 4 I believe)

Huge has the highest average score of the four players by the way and is rated lowest...

Re: Firehorse, question re: new 2011 ranking chart
Thanks for the heads up nasty!! Of course it makes more sense to compare same grade players.

This answers at least one question:

League Season Stats for huge30553 in Season ( 111 )
Team TBT ( A Grade ) Season Score ( 144 ) Matches Played ( 3 )
Best Match Score ( 76 ) Questions Faced ( 450 ) Match Average ( 48 )
L : Season Champ Score ( 584 ) Season Champ Rank ( 11 ) CPM ( 171.7 )
Row ( 2 ) Match Row Score ( 18 ) Season Row Score ( 30 ) Fast ( 2.25 )
Match Fast Score ( 108 ) Match CPM Score ( 108 )

Huge has actually only played 2 matches and faced 300 questions not 450. His match average is actually 72, not 48. It must have been that super secret mode game that cashed him in at zero.

Fire obviously doesn?t have the time to familiarize himself with each and every player?s participation. I think it?s incumbent upon all coaches to go through the stats of their players to make sure that the number of matches played and questions faced is correct and that match averages correlate. If you play two half matches for example, your match average may well be higher than your best match score.

If Fire can get this system going it will be a wonderful tool for assessing grade levels, but I think he needs our help to refine it, track proper stats because all sorts of things can happen when you are working with that volume of variables.

I still remain marvelously befuddled.

Cheers

I do love marvellous befuddlement. Truly it's kind of my forte--the combo of marvel and befuddledom. There is an unmeasurable factor as well which is a player's sometimes invisible history and contributions to teams in an often immeasurable way--and I know we are trying to establish an objective ranking here. I see that this is fascinating-like some players having only played one match--has anyone played three matches yet? Enjoy these ruminations on numbers and averages--these efforts to arrive at a kind of certainty in the midst of the marvellous. Sun

Hiyas Sunny (F)

Two A Grade teams have actually played all four of their matches, TAT and KFB, and are immeasurably waiting to move into the quarter-finals without befuddledom.

Hope that helps!
